Test Anxiety An Age Old Remedy - 1273 Words
People from all walks of life experience the same type of thoughts, emotions, and feelings. People share many forms of disorders and syndromes, whether they be informally diagnosed or considered an age-old remedy. With that, one syndrome that is commonly shared through many peopleââ¬âmany young college students in particularââ¬âis test anxiety. The syndrome is fairly self-explanatory, but the standard definition, at least according to Psychology Today, says: test anxiety is a psychological condition in which people experience extreme distress and anxiety in testing situations. The formality of certain institutions that require an evaluation of its participants can lead to great distress and at times despair, which is essentially test anxietyââ¬âandâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦For the instances of young college students, however, Dudley Barlow argues in his article Doing School: How We Are Creating a Generation of Stressed Out, Materialistic, and Miseducated Students,â⠬ that the formality of todayââ¬â¢s educational institutions and structure of its system is the primary reason for what causes test anxiety. There becomes too much of a burden on the student to do not only well, Barlow, but for the student to perform at his or her best capabilities especially in stressful circumstances. According to Barlow, this does not resemble anything of true education. Regardless of Barlowââ¬â¢s analysis of contemporary education, he makes a valid point about the infrastructure of schools and colleges doing more harm than good when trying to record its studentsââ¬â¢ academic capacity, for the importance placed on the results of these tests and records can become overwhelming and can lead to levels of stress and anxiety that are deemed astronomical. This is how, like in Barlowââ¬â¢s title piece exclaims, [we] are creating a generation of stressed students.
